Managing your personal finances starts with knowing exactly how much you take home after taxes, and having a clear plan for every dollar. Our Monthly Salary & Budget Allocator is a 100% free, client-side utility designed to help you quickly visualize your financial health without sending your private salary data to any server.
What is the 50/30/20 Rule?
Popularized by Senator Elizabeth Warren, the 50/30/20 rule is an intuitive budgeting framework. It suggests dividing your net, after-tax income into three core categories:
- 50% for Needs: Essential living expenses like rent, mortgage, groceries, utilities, and minimum debt payments.
- 30% for Wants: Discretionary spending such as dining out, entertainment, hobbies, and vacations.
- 20% for Savings & Debt: Building an emergency fund, investing for retirement, or aggressively paying down high-interest debt.
Alternative Budgeting Rules
If the standard 50/30/20 rule doesn't fit your lifestyle, our calculator also supports the 70/20/10 Rule, often used by those who want to dedicate a larger portion of their income to living expenses while still saving and giving/investing. For complete control, select the Custom Split to manually adjust your ratios. Remember, the golden rule of custom budgeting is that your allocations must always equal 100%.
How is Net Take-Home Pay Calculated?
To keep things fast and simple, this tool uses a flat estimated tax rate. The formula used is:Net Pay = Gross Salary - (Gross Salary × (Estimated Tax Rate ÷ 100)). While real-world taxes often involve progressive brackets and deductions, entering your average effective tax rate provides an excellent baseline for monthly planning.
